Affton Fire Protection District
A great place to interact and see some of the happenings around the Affton Fire District.
It’s a new day with the same old story…Please don’t burn!Dry air and gusty winds will be limited to southeast Missouri today where wildfires are ongoing, but will expand areawide Friday. There is potential for more critical fire danger in the Ozarks and I-44 corridor tomorrow afternoon. Avoid burning and anything that can start a fire.
St. Louis County only allows recreational burning such as a small, contained bonfire. Today is not the day to have one though with the conditions we have for fires! ![]()
Prior to Friday’s storms we had numerous brush fires across the county, with several houses being lost in North County. Please exercise caution with BBQs, cigarette smoking and any other activity that may throw sparks. If performing outside work such as welding/metal cutting please keep a hose or extinguisher readily available.Near-record warmth coupled with dry air and gusty winds will promote elevated to critical fire danger today. Burning is strongly discouraged except by professionals!
We are saddened to hear of the passing of retired Captain John O’Laughlin or as we called him Johnny O. Working for our neighbor Shrewsbury FD for 40 years Johnny O worked countless emergencies alongside us. He positively influenced so many firefighters in his long career. He had one of the best attitudes and smiles you could come across in this business and it was contagious. We were fortunate enough to have him reside in the Affton district and he was always supportive of us. Not only was he a great firefighter to work alongside though he was a great friend to many of us here. Rest easy Johnny O!It is with profound sorrow that the Shrewsbury Fire Department announces the passing of Captain John “Johnny O” O’Laughlin. A 40-year veteran of the fire service, his legacy has left an indelible mark on firefighters in Shrewsbury and all of St. Louis County. His passing is a tremendous loss, not only to Shrewsbury Fire but also for the countless individuals he mentored, inspired, and shaped throughout his extraordinary career.
A Navy Veteran, John, served the City of Shrewsbury from December 31, 1979, through June 1, 2020 with Pride, Integrity, and Compassion. His ever-present energy, laughter and smile will be missed by all. ![]()
